SEO Principles That Are Important to Small Business Owners (Part 1)

Being a small business owner, everything is a struggle. You are the cashier, the accountant, the customer service personnel, and even sometimes the cleaning lady!

Six Woman Having a Meeting

Oh, how can you juggle all the work? Remember, you still have to manage a business on top of that! You don’t need to go and learn everything about SEO. You just need to know how SEO works so you can apply it to your business. Read the SEO principles below…

  • User Intent

    • Yes, content is important! However, if content does not satisfy the user’s intent, it’s pretty useless. If your content does not provide a solution, then, it has no purpose for the user.
    • I’m not saying that it’s okay to produce mediocre content. No, you have to continue to make high-quality content. At the same time, you need to ask yourself, “Will this content fulfill the user’s intent?”
    • Think of what the users may seek when they search a particular term. For example, some search for “Chinese food” so that would mean that the user is craving for something to eat.
    • Then, ask yourself, “How many websites could fulfill this intention to buy Chinese food?” Most probably, a lot, right? There are numerous websites where you can order food online.
    • You are up against thousands of websites having the same intent in mind. However, you have to remember that Google is not there to fulfill your intent as a seller. Google is concerned with the user’s intent.
    • Basically, a website that helps users achieve their intent will, most likely, rank higher than does that do not help users. So, produce more content with the user’s intent in mind.
  • Local SEO

    • Since you are a small business, most probably, you are concerned with the local market. Local SEO is for you!
    • In case you are wondering, it is a different type of SEO. From the name itself, these SEO elements will cater to your local environment.
    • I will not go into specific details. However, I’m going to day that you need to push for local relevancy. So, you need to focus on the nature of links rather than the number of links.
    • Reiterate on your location and that you cater to a particular place. Add the specific location in the page title, heading, URL, and other key areas.
  • What you need:

    • A personalized organizational structure for your business. It does not mean that a rival’s plan will also fit your business. So, make one that suits your business.
    • Add a Google Map of your business on your website’s contact page.
    • Verify your business pages on Bing, Google My Business, Yelp, and other web directories.
    • Know all your business listing and all these business pages should have a consistent NAP (name, address, and phone.)

You can also look into local newspapers, local producers. I’m not saying that you will just shrug off bigger opportunities. Start small because you will eventually get there. Every large corporation had its humble beginnings so be patient. Your time will surely come!

SEO Factors That Are Really Important (Part 2)

In part 1, I discussed the importance of content, and how to optimize content. This time around, I will talk about other SEO factors aside from content.

Websites are created for your users; that is why content should be your priority. User engagement is an SEO factor you might want to take note. The more users interact, the more effective a website is.

  • Pages per Session

    • This metric will show you how many web pages a specific user clicks before abandoning your website.
    • Google Analytics can give you a page per session data, and also the average time a user spends on your website.
    • What can this tell you? Of course, if you have notice that people leave your site immediately, maybe you need to improve your website. The moment users click a link, it should be compelling. It should catch their attention immediately!
    • If you see that your blog posts get more readers, then, it’s time to write multiple articles. Write more of what they want to read.

So, how to enhance pages per session?

  • Analyze the results and look for solutions that fit the needs of your users.
  • Like I said earlier, identify what works and what doesn’t! If you think some web pages have higher bounce rates, then, find ways to grab your users’ attention.
  • Add call-to-action buttons on your web pages to encourage more page clicks. Add “read more…” or “learn more…” so users will stay longer. Don’t provide all information in one page. Allow users to move by linking related pages.
  • Help your users navigate your website by guiding them on articles or blog posts that they may find useful. Link your pages so they can easily read related articles.

  • Bounce Rate

    • The bounce rate will tell you how a user likes your landing page or home page.
    • High bounce rates mean that they think your page is not engaging enough. It just doesn’t interest them.
    • If you are selling products online, you would want your users to stay and read more about your products. You have to keep your bounce rates low by satisfying your users’ wants. Think of methods that will entertain your users.

So, how to keep bounce rate at a minimal level?

  • Compelling is the word. Content should be compelling. It should grab their attention.
  • Word choices are important. The moment they read something, it should be interesting. It should be personal, and not some generic-looking post.
  • Enhance website speed, and web pages should load immediately.
  • Make sure that the home page addresses an issue. Show the users what they are missing if they don’t take action right now. The users should be able to tell themselves that I need this product in my life.
  • Remove annoying ads, and pop-ups that hamper the browsing experience.

  • Click-Through Rate

    • CTR will tell you if the interaction between the user and your website is successful.
    • A low CTR could mean that your website’s content is not relevant to the user’s intent.

So, how to enhance your CTR?

  • Your page titles and meta descriptions should coincide.
  • Add a reason why users need to click the link. For example, there’s a buy1, take1 promo on your site.

Mobile Design Elements to Ditch this 2019 (Part 2)

If you try design elements in a small screen, there’s a chance that your web visitors will find it extremely annoying. With mobile, your space has shrunk and you need to say goodbye to some web design elements. If you continue to fit everything in one page, it would require a lot of time for scrolling alone.

Website on a Mobile Phone

However, when you try to reduce, you are improving your website’s conversion rates, better user experience, and sleeker design. So, it’s time to remove these elements on your mobile site.

  • STICKY NOTES

    • Yes, even sites use sticky notes. Like actual sticky notes, this element is placed is one corner so you won’t forget an important task. As you go through with your schedule, the sticky note stays on its position. Whenever you need it, it’s just on the side.
    • A live chat and a feedback button are both examples of these sticky web elements. Wherever the user may go, they can easily click on the live chat button when they need help. It comes in handy when you encounter problems.
    • On desktop, these sticky notes are really effective, but it wouldn’t work on mobile sites. The major downside is that the sticky note blocks your web content. Since it acts like an actual sticky note, it is placed on top of everything. It’s on top your text, your graph, your play button, and your photos.
    • Basically, these sticky notes are a huge distraction on mobile sites. If you need help, it’s ready to give assistance. However, when you don’t need help, you will just see it as an inconvenience especially if your screen is as small as a mobile screen.
    • If you think that your users need a sticky note following them, then, give your users the liberty to remove these sticky elements. Another helpful alternative is to provide social media buttons instead. By doing this, your users can easily share a blog post that they really liked.
  • UNNECESSARY CONTENT

    • Well, yes, you have read it right. Content can be a distraction. Sometimes, it’s the content that you need to cut down.
    • Don’t bombard your web visitors with huge blocks of text on your homepage alone. One particular website had content written over its header. My gosh, NO!
    • Don’t put text above your header because the header serves as your users’ navigation. If you insert a text above, the navigation options won’t be as visible. How are your customers going browse your products if they can’t even find the navigation menu?
    • Highlight important promotion on your main page, but don’t list down every promotion you have.
    • Instead of itemizing everything on one page, I think it’s better to add a search button. That way, your home page ensures undivided attention for navigation, latest deals, buying guides, and current promos. If a user needs to look for something specific, then, the search feature is something for them.

Don’t wait until your web visitors gets frustrated. Simplify things for them and prioritize on providing a better navigation on a mobile setting. Test your ideas and apply what you think is best for your website. If you need more tips, read part 1 right here!

Mobile Design Elements to Ditch this 2019 (Part 1)

It’s time to clean up! If on a desktop website, you have an ample space to play with. On mobile, it’s a different story. You need to find ways to maximize the small screen size. You can’t congest the tiny mobile screen with too much unnecessary information.

With that being said, you need to remove these mobile design elements to provide a better user experience.

  • SIDEBARS

    • Sidebars have been helpful in dividing the website into different sections. However, when it’s on a mobile site, sidebars don’t really navigational help.
    • On a desktop, it looks trendy and modern. Plus, it serves both a navigation and an advertising purpose. However, on mobile, it can be a distraction. So, it’s really convenient if these sidebars disappear once you access a site on a mobile device.
    • Because if you don’t remove the sidebars, mobile users will need to get past the sidebar before they can read the actual content. A brief desktop page might appear too long on mobile.
    • Sidebars usually contain:
      • External ads.
      • Internal ads. This includes promotion of your own products, and web store.
      • Blog comment form.
      • Email subscriber form.
    • Imagine all these information flashing on your mobile screen. It’s totally not cool! Before you get to click a link you want to read, these are the things you need to go through. It might take you forever to read something!
    • Having 3 forms in a mobile website is just too much so remove the duplicates and stick with showing your actual content.
    • Since people are on social media most of the time, feature your prominent social media account. If it’s Twitter, then, highlight your Twitter feed. There’s no need to bombard your users with information they are not interested.
    • Lastly, blog posts should just be plain texts. If it’s filled with images, it will take awhile to load. So, if the titles are on an image, I suggest these titles should be converted to simple texts. Mobile sites should be a lightweight experience. Users should easily move from one post to another without any problems.
  • POP-UPS

    • Pop-ups are a normal occurrence on a desktop site. When you see one on mobile, it’s hard to locate the “x” or close button. Such a torture!
    • What’s worse is that some pop-ups are gigantic to a point that you need to see the whole thing for you to close it. You spend your time scrolling for the close button, which is why it’s not a good idea to retain pop-ups on a mobile site.
    • People go to your website to find new information. Instead, they see a pop-up blocking their way. It’s annoying to see a pop-up the moment you step foot on a website.
    • Sometimes, websites are quite redundant. On their main page, there’s an existing promo. On the pop-up, the same thing is advertised. At least, trey to show a different promotion on the pop-up so they will be interested to read it.
    • Still, I don’t recommend putting annoying pop-ups on your home page because it is one sure way to drive away interested customers!

If you notice that your customers share more reviews on Instagram, then, allocate more time for Instagram. Carefully study and analyze where your customers are. User engagements is a great indicator that it’s the platform for your business.

Carefully Choose Content to Publish.

After you have found own space on the internet, think of your future content. “Will this post help my customers?” “Will this post encourage more page visits?” If the answer is yes, then, publish the post. Remember that your social media posts should have a clear purpose; the posts should not be all over the place! Instead, the posts should offer helpful information, essential business details, and so on.

Be Responsive.

When a customer shares a positive review on social media, don’t just ignore it. Say thank you because they took time to tell the world about your product.

Their social media post could communicate with people you weren’t able to approach so be grateful. If a customer wants to talk and share their experience, always find time to reply. Social media can help you show your customers how you appreciate their efforts.

Share Your Customers’ Social Media Posts.

Don’t hesitate to share a positive review. On Facebook, there’s a share button you can use to let others know of a customer’s shopping experience. Things are the same on Twitter; there’s a retweet button to help you easily share a tweet.

Today, when a brand notices your review, it’s flattering. Many customers are elated of this effort when businesses take time to share your review. It gives them their 15 minutes of fame, and it becomes highlight of their day.

Solve Your Customers’ Problems.

Social media is not just about sharing reviews and interacting with fans. It’s also a great place to address problems that your customers may be experiencing. Since most of them are on social media, they can instantly post their frustrations and grievances. You can save the day by immediately dealing with it, and providing the right solutions.

When you are able solve a problem, you are proving that you are not just after their money. Your interaction doesn’t end the moment the transaction is done. You are there for them even after the sales process! You show that you truly care for your customers.

The more problems you address, the more satisfied your customers will get. You will surely gain a brand advocate, and no amount of money can buy that!

Who Can Become Brand Advocates?

I already talked about “The Importance of Product Advocates,” and “Tips in Acquiring More Brand Advocates.Today, let us discuss another important aspect, which is identifying who can become your brand ambassadors. Of course, your loyal customers are the best candidates for the position. However, let’s categorize them into groups so you will know how to interact with them:

  1. Referrers. These customers introduce your products to their own circle of people.
  2. Committed customers. These are the people that will engage with you, buy your products, leave a positive review, and repeat the cycle. Basically, they are the people satisfied with your products that they repeat their transactions.
  3. Social media sharers. These people may not be as active as #2, but they can really help you in terms of social media. Because they are always online, they can always “share” or “like” your posts. They can give your content a nudge so that it will be exposed to more people.
  4. Honest reviewers. These customers are very straightforward and direct. Whether it’s a good or bad review, they are ready to give a detailed review on your products. They are willing to share their constructive criticism in order for you to improve your service in the future.

How to Encourage Your Customers to Talk About Your Brand

Other things may change, but in the online world of business, new customers will always trust the opinion of the existing customers. In order for your current customers to draw in more people, they need to share their product reviews. Here are a few tips on how to ask for reviews:

  • Reviews aren’t given instantaneously.
    • You can force your customers to leave a review right away. It’s something that is freely given to you. Because if your customers like your product, they will surely let you know. You should not pressure them to leave reviews. Just wait; perhaps, they are still thinking on what to write.
  • It’s never about the number of reviews.
    • A perfect star rating is useless if there are no comments. Potential customers won’t be convinced of a perfect rating if there are no specific details given.
    • So, do not focus on gaining numerous product reviews. Instead, go over the reviews and highlight those reviews that tell a story. You can post them on your social media accounts or put it up on your website.
  • Another way to encourage existing customers to leave a review is to start a loyalty program. It’s a tried and tested way of gaining more brand advocates:
    • Stop avoiding the negative experiences.
      • When a customer encounters a problem, a loyalty program may help appease the situation. It doesn’t mean that you don’t have to address the issue, but offering loyalty points may win back these frustrated customers. Because of your loyalty program, things can go from bad to good.
    • Encourage to share reviews on social media.
      • You can reward your customers with points every time they share a review on their social media accounts. Whether it’s on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram, their positive review will go a long way so encourage them to share their shopping experience. It will surely convince other people to shop as well!

Tips in Acquiring More Brand Advocates

Your customers won’t become brand advocates in a snap. To gain more brand advocates, there are things you need to follow. So, for this post, I will give tips in gaining true blue customers. The goal here is not just to get new customers, but we want the dedicated ones.

People Bumping Fists

People Bumping Fists and Working as a Team!

  • Tip #1: Don’t impose.

    • There’s no need to demand or beg for reviews because the right people for you will find its way. Because when you tell them what to do, they tend to the opposite. Product advocacy should be as natural as brushing your teeth in the morning.
    • Once you find your own tribe, they will be there for you. They will be willing to give time and effort just to advertise your products. So, there’s no need to worry. Most importantly, there is no need for you to force people.
  • Tip #2: Think of your customers.

    • When you are designing a product, always think about how the design will help better the user experience. Remember, you are the seller, and not the actual consumer. Your customers should be a happy response when using your products.
    • Through your product, your customer’s life should be made easy. Because if they are happy with the result, for sure, your customers will make a second or third purchase. Not only that, they will surely share the good news to other people because we like to discuss things that make us smile and happy.
    • As a seller, you should look for a middle ground. Your product should look good and should be functional at the same time.
  • Tip #3: Establish trust.

    • This is the most important tip of all. Your brand advocates are not paid employees yet they are putting their name on the line to testify for your product. They are aware of the ramifications the moment other people won’t like the product the same way they did.
    • Alleviate their doubts and reassure your brand advocates that you are backing them up. How do we do that exactly?
      • Stick to your promises.

      • Make sure you are able to provide an excellent customer service. Many businesses are just good at selling a bunch of products, but they fail to offer help to their customers when they need help. We all experienced that at some point, right? So, when you are selling something, state only factual statements. If you can’t fulfill it, then, don’t flash it on your website.
      • You may offer a flexible return policy if your customers think the product is not for them. You can also offer a FREE trial so customers test your product without actually buying it.
      • When you are honest to your customers, for sure, they will be honest too, and leave a constructive product review.
      • Be approachable.

      • Customers engage with your brand because they are interested so don’t just ignore their inquiry.
      • Personally, I do not patronize websites that offer no help. Same goes for your other customers; surely, they don’t like it when messages are left unanswered.
      • Social media is supposed to bridge the gap between buyers and sellers so use it to your advantage. Greet interested customers with a smile and be ready to answer anything they ask.

SEO Factors That Are Really Important (Part 1)

We all know Google name 2 primary ranking factors: links and content. However, search engines, not just Google, are continuing to evolve, and ranking tools don’t just look at the links and texts.

While not everyone agrees on what to follow and what not to follow, these 5 on-site SEO factors are. Below are the SEO factors you should always take not when creating a website:

  • Content

    • Of course, content will forever be relevant. You should know that it’s not enough to just post something out there.
    • Around 91% of content gets no traffic from Google according from a new research by Ahrefs.
    • So, how do we go about this?
  • There should be content relevance. Content is useless if no one wants it. You should always consider your users when publishing new content.
    • Know what your readers or users are intending to search, read, and buy. In fact, Google’s algorithms are working nonstop to analyze better how users do their searches.
    • We can know what the users want in a form of survey, answer boxes, and polls. Ultimately, content is the number 1 ranking factor because if your content is pointless, no one will ever view or read it.

So, how to enhance content?

  • Know the purpose of your keywords. Is it to inform? Is to help people shop? Is it to offer navigation?
  • Study the search engine results of your keywords, and know the top-ranking keywords.
  • Search similar keywords, and know how to enhance the content using those similar terms.
  • Deep Content

    • Deep content is also known as long-form content. Now, long-form content is considered a popular choice for a lot of informational searches.
    • In fact, according to HubSpot, 2,250 and 2,500 words of deep content got more web traffic than those shorter posts.
    • Good news for those who are writing longer than 2,500 words. Being skilled on a particular subject will surely be helpful in terms of SEO.

So, how to enhance deep content?

  • Know the top-level website and study their content carefully.
  • Add similar keywords to draw content on other subcategories or topics.
  • Address all the questions the user may have.
  • Arranged Content

    • You also have to organize your content. It is important add title tags and header tags.
    • Adding tags can help with conveying your message better.
    • When you categorize, it is readable for both your users and search engines.
    • Helps pages become more scannable.

So, how to enhance arranged content?

  • Add focus keywords to the URL, page title, and other related area.
  • Add different headers (H1 – H6) when you cite the focus keywords.
  • User Engagement

  • You create websites so your users can interact with each other. A website should be accessible to people and search engines. So, you should always think of new ways to excite your readers.
  • Ask yourself if your content is intriguing and captivating. Are you personally bored with it?
  • User engagement is an indicator that your users like your content. Keep making posts that always generate comments and reactions from people. More tips will be discussed soon so stayed tuned for part 2!

The Importance of Product Advocates

For most companies, they constantly think of new ways to get new customers — they improve their conversion process for new web visitors to easily become customers. Loyal and existing customers are shoved on the side because companies are too focused on finding new customers. However, according to Harvard Business Review, bringing in new customers is 5 to 25 times more expensive than keeping current customers.

People Standing

So, in this blog post, I will introduce the importance of product advocates and why having advocates is actually good for business. Before turning loyal customers to product advocates, let us clearly define who these people are.

Who Are They?

  • Product advocates (or brand advocates) are your customers who strongly recommend your products to other people.
  • They do not promote because they are paid; they do it because they sincerely believe on the effectiveness on the product. You are assured of their 100% support.
  • They either talk about it online like sharing on social media or posting a positive review. It can also be by personally telling their family, friends, and colleagues about the product.
  • The promotion is all for free. They simply want to everyone to know about the product’s existence.

Why Customer Support Is Important?

If you think it’s the marketing team who does the promotion, then, you’re wrong. In this digital age, tables have turn because it’s not just the marketing team’s responsibility. Your customers are now part of the promotion. One negative review could go viral, and could greatly affect your online sales. Their satisfaction is important. You have to make sure that your customers’ shopping experience should be pleasant. Once they feel positive about, they won’t hesitate to shop again soon. Thus, they became product advocates of what you are selling. Advocates help entice more people to check out your products.

  • Credible reviews.

    • Nothing beats honesty. When online shoppers look for social proof, reviews from product advocates will stand out. Of course, when potential buyers research on a product, they will choose the item that has the most authentic reviews.
    • People can tell basing from how they formulate their reviews. They will include important features and give emphasis on the details. If you ask Google, brand advocates often share 19% more reviews than paid marketers.
  • More real, less fake.

    • When someone loves something, they will talk endlessly about it. They can’t simply contain themselves, making their reviews more authentic and believable. When customers go crazy about your products on Facebook, you acquired one effective endorser. You didn’t even spend a single dollar for it! Shoppers online would surely trust word-of-mouth ads than the paid ads you see on Facebook.
  • Increase brand awareness.

    • With the rise of digital influencers, there’s a number of people that are famous online. They have their set of followers, and these influencers are definitely the product advocates you need. With their thousands of followers, they can easily increase awareness about your different products.
    • The public can now recall your products. They trust a post on Instagram over a brand that’s totally unknown to them.
    • Plus, video reviews on Youtube really help too because customers will always listen to fellow customers. When they see a trending video review, then, the product must be wonderful.

Tips in Reducing Your Website’s Bounce Rate (Part 2)

Last time, I discussed bounce rate, why it’s important to keep the bounce rate low, and the different tips to avoid increasing bounce rate. For this post, I will add more tips. Be sure to apply these on your website:

Add Newer Posts on the Sidebar

  • Aside from adding related posts as discussed in part 1, another way to convince people to stay is to add your latest posts the sidebar.
  • They might find something interesting especially if they don’t like what they are currently reading. Instead of abandoning the page, then, find new articles on the right side.Person Holding Turned-on Silver Laptop Computer
  • You are giving your readers more options to stay. You can add you most-read articles aside from highlighting the newer posts. The bottom line is that you should utilize the maximum potential of your sidebar.
  • Whatever they are reading on your blog, the sidebar widget will always be there to give them option. This entices your readers to explore other articles too.
  • For WordPress users, WordPress Popular Posts is a plugin you can use to highlight popular posts. This plugin will display the articles with the most visits. You can also manually any blog post you wish to be included. Creating your own personalized list is a superb idea too!

Link Up Old Articles

  • As much as possible, when you post something new, make sure to promote your old articles too!
  • If one topic is related to another, link it up. So, if you want to review part 1, simply follow this linkSee what I did there? I added a link so that people can jump from part 2 to part 1.
  • It basically creates a domino effect. If one starts reading a blog post, he will probably read 3 more because you  were able to connect similar articles together.
  • It’s best to not depend on the related post widget. Insert links within the body of your blog post.
  • Old articles will now resurface, making it visible to more people, and at the same time, lowering your website’s bounce rate.

Speed Up Your Website

  • You know what’s something that will definitely annoy your web visitors? A website that takes forever to load.
  • When a website is slow as a turtle, it will surely affect your bounce rate. Without a doubt, web visitors will instantly leave.
  • So, is there a way to test a website’s speed? You can visit Google’s PageSpeed Insights. Don’t worry because the service is free.
  • All you need to do is paste the URL and click analyze. PageSpeed Insights will give you a detailed analysis after. If you get 90 or above, it’s fast. However, if you get below 50, then, it’s slow.

Make Website Navigation Easier

  • When your website is clean and clutter-free, web visitors know where to go. It would not be a chore to find something so they will stay and browse some more. Clear navigation is important if want to keep people in.
  • Stop complicating the navigation! Provide only the essentials: home button, about us, contact us, and blog. If people won’t learn important details on a page, then, it’s time to delete it.
