Why Your Small Business Should Invest in SEO This Year

Despite the huge impact that SEO can have for a business, not every business owner is interested in investing in it. They have other ideas of what they should be spending their money on such as a new logo, a brand new office chair, or a company away day.

But SEO should be considered an essential investment for any company that uses a website to bring in business. There really is no exception. Don’t believe us? Here are seven reasons investing in SEO is a must.

1.    Search engines are probably your main source of traffic

Regardless of how you market your website, search engines like Google probably send you the majority of your traffic. Rather than trying to improve the number of clicks you get from Facebook, you can have a much bigger impact with a much smaller increase in organic traffic.

2.    It is a long-term investment

When you pay for an ad on Google or Facebook, your ad lasts only as long as it takes to for someone to click on it. Then it is gone and you have to pay for another one. But SEO can keep providing returns long after you have stopped optimzing your website or creating new content.

3.    SEO is more affordable than PPC

In both the short-term and the long-term, investing in SEO is much more affordable than spending money on PPC ads. Sure, you can get instant results from a PPC campaign, but you can get bigger results for longer by investing less in SEO.

4.    It can improve brand reputation

Great SEO can do a huge amount for your brand. Ranking at the top of search engines is something of a status symbol. It means that Google finds your website trustworthy and reputable. Creating content also gives you the chance to show off just how much you know about the industry, too.

5.    You can increase customer numbers

The more traffic you bring to your website, the more potential customers you have. It’s really that simple. Organic traffic tends to be much higher converting than social traffic, too. Meaning that it won’t take much more visitors to increase customer numbers.

6.    Improved Return on Investment

Investing in any form of paid advertising or marketing, whether that is a billboard or a Google PPC ad, is a one-off. Once it is gone it is gone. That makes it hard to get a great return on investment unless you can convert a lot of visitors. Because SEO is longer term, the ROI tends to be much higher.

7.   SEO grows and grows

The more you invest in SEO and the longer you do it, the bigger impact it will have on your business. One post after years of doing SEO can have the same impact as five posts now. That means it’s best to start as soon as possible.

Small business marketing simply isn’t complete without SEO. So what are you waiting for?

Passive and Active Product Reviews

You might hear of passive and active voice, but passive and active does not only pertain to the English grammar. In the world of e-commerce, there is also what you call passive and active reviews. As a consumer, you might wonder what these 2 kinds of reviews are.

Well, let me give a brief introduction. In order to convince more people to shop online, businesses normally gather and bring together “passive reviews,” and “active reviews.” It is necessary for you to know the contrast between the 2 reviews because it will help you form a sound decision.

Let’s compare passive and active.

  • Passive reviews can be composed by anyone. When I say anyone, I mean that there’s no limit on who can create such reviews. Literally, anyone can just claim that this product is a fraud without even verifying the authenticity of such statements.
  • Additionally, anyone can just create a negative review, and these passive reviewers don’t have to divulge their true identity. Thus, it’s easy to make up stories and fabricate senseless reviews. Surely, passive reviews tend to be more filled with hate, loathing, and tirades.
  • Customers can criticize a brand without harming their own reputation. These unfavorable reviews won’t affect the reviewer, but it will certainly endanger the business or brand they mentioned.
  • Meanwhile, active reviews are from actual customers. Businesses thoughtfully gather product reviews from ALL the verified buyers. Customers can only leave a review after they have successfully availed a product.

Does it really matter?

Without a doubt, the kind of review you are reading is important. You base your decisions on what to purchase and what not to purchase by the reviews you look at. If you don’t know the difference between passive and active reviews, you could trust a product review that’s not even verified. Worse, you made an irreversible mistake just because you followed an inaccurate review.

Four People Holding Green Check Signs Standing on the Field Photography

Here are some valuable tips that will help you when you are reading reviews online:

  • Since active reviews mean a confirmed transaction, you are certain that these reviews are legitimate, and that the mentioned product features are real. It echoes the true essence of the product.
  • Yes, we all make mistakes, but remember that these negative write-ups you see could be a passive review. When a company gets passive reviews, the public would immediately assume that the company delivers a horrendous service.
  • On that note, don’t instantly believe what you read online. Companies with passive reviews tend to have lower ratings than companies with having only active reviews. The star ratings can deceive you sometimes.
  • Look for the kind of review because active reviews are more detailed. The customers can talk about their unique experience and they praise specific product features they like. Meanwhile, passive reviews are mostly negative. People can say that they don’t like the product, but they can’t even elaborate what part they hate.
  • You also have to remember that it is easier to grumble about a flaw rather than highlighting the gains and benefits. For all we know, the negative review could just be a demolition job from its competitors.
  • Ultimately, don’t be easily fooled by passive reviews. Always check if there is a sign that indicates “verified purchase,” or “verified buyer.”  Equip yourself with the knowledge of knowing the difference between a passive and an active review.

Why an Emotional Appeal Will Always Win Customers

In terms of technology, there are so many advancements that we don’t know where to start exactly. For one, we live in a mobile-centric world now. It is hard not to depend on our mobile devices. Inside our gadgets, we have our messages, conversations, emails, photos, and many more.

Four Person's High-fiving Each Others

The Changes Brought About by High Tech Gadgets.

  • Social media has been a very important part of our lives. For more than 7,694,800,000 people in this planet, it’s impossible not to be exposed to these technological advancements. Facebook, along with other social media apps, is an essential component of how we communicate today.
  • Aside from conversing and interacting, shopping has also greatly shifted from going through numerous stores to not leaving our homes. Did you know that more than 1.8 billion people shopped online in 2018 alone? That’s a lot people! Indeed, technology has brought tremendous change on how we go about our daily lives.

Emotional Creatures.

Because of these advancements in technology, you would think that even humans have changed. Nope, there are things that remain the same up to this day. Despite the numerous factors that vastly influenced us, we are still predictable beings. We enjoy good company; we appreciate good food; we despise being alone. Heck, we even cry when we watch something sad on TV. You really can’t deny that humans are inherently emotional.

Humans Have the Same Hardware.

As humans, whatever we decide on, we are under the control of the id, ego and super-ego. Whether we see hand bags, shoes, food, or the latest electronic gadgets, we can buy those items on a whim. Why do we get easily convince by these marketing strategies? Why can’t we say no?

According to Sigmund Freud, the human personality has 3 vital elements: the id, the ego, and the super-ego. The id includes all our primal instincts, and as I said earlier, we are naturally emotional. So, online businesses can use this fact to subtly convince us to buy whatever it is they offer.

If you have a business to manage, it is crucial to improve your website, and develop new ways to convert visitors to customers. Take note of this important fact that affect the shopper’s decision.

  • Emotions Remain Dominant.

  • No matter how humans claim to be logical, the truth is that we all are controlled by our emotions.
  • As marketers, when you advertise your products, never forget to tap the human emotions. Always captivate the hearts of your audience.
  • There’s even one study that concluded that the human brain favors emotion appeal. The facts and evidences we see help them decide. However, this logical approach makes the brain more resolute and unflinching. In short, when we consider the facts and the logic behind everything, our defenses are up!
  • On the other hand, when it’s an emotional appeal, our brains do NOT question these marketing strategies. I’m sure at some point you bought an item just because it made you smile. Perhaps, you went on a shopping spree because you got dumped.
  • In these situations, it proves that we tend to buy products based on our feelings. We decided to purchase an item simply because it made us happy.

Tips in Enhancing Your SEO Strategy

In order to upgrade your SEO strategy, you need to first identify the areas of improvement. For me, these are things you need to develop:

  1. Content
  2. Link Building
  3. Click-Through Rate
  4. Engagements

Two Men Fist Bumps

  • Try to Produce Exceptional Content

    • Back then, 500-word posts are long enough for your content. Now, the articles are longer; some are even extended up to 2,000 words. Dig deeper and expand ideas further. Don’t just discuss the surface. Explain each topic and subtopic in detail.
    • This way, you will appear more knowledgeable to your readers. You are regarded with authority. Furthermore, you need to remember that Google doesn’t care about your intent but your users’ intent.
    • If you produce more content that provides users the solution they need, then, search engines will love you and rank your website higher.
    • Research more on how to create longer contents with word count of more than 500 words. Longer content will allow you to use a variety of relevant keywords. This will help you in improving your website ranking.
    • How to make content longer? You can add the following to enhance and diversify your content:
      • Quick poll to know your users’ preference.
      • Interactive quizzes for fun.
      • Integrating both texts and images into one infographic.
      • Survey questions on how to improve your website.
      • Videos tutorials or how to guides.
    • These elements offer a breath of fresh air, break monotony, lessen bounce rate, and help users stay longer on your website. Ultimately, it boosts your site rankings.

  • Increase Link Building Efforts

    • When you provide quality content, people will easily quote your content or share your link. It will spread across the internet in no time.
    • Different website should share your link or include your link in their site. Also, you have to practice internal linking. Share links in various parts of website and not just your main page.
    • As much as possible, you would want other websites to link you using your brand name or your preferred keywords. So, you need to look at your opponents’ links. Do a lot websites share their link? Do other people quote their content? Make sure you cater to websites that your opponents have penetrated.
    • Always go back to rule #1. Produce superior content so other people will be linking your website to their own site. Motivate people to share your link and its contents. You can only do that if your content interests your readers.

  • Enhance Page Titles to Increase Click-Through Rate

    • Your titles are what your readers see first when viewing the search engine results. Formulate attention-grabbing headlines.
    • First impression matters. It is what encourages users to click. Give your titles some thought and don’t make hasty decisions. When adding titles, be specific, be unique, and not some generic-sounding blog post.
    • Use power words to compel users to read your articles. Your titles should be able to subtly tell your readers, “Hey, click me!”

    • Add relevant call-to-action buttons all throughout your website to guide users about the ins and out of your website.
    • For them to comment more, of course, you need to do your share. Interact with readers and reply to their comments. You can’t expect them to do all the talking. Do your part and reach out as well!

What Your SEO Strategy Needs (Part 2)

In the previous post, I talked about the importance of mind mapping tools and project management tools. Today, I continue the 2nd part of the series and discuss further what your SEO strategy needs. Keep in mind that NOT all SEO strategies are the same, but there are the basic essentials.

  1. Knowing Your Audience

  • If you are done studying the company, then, the next part is knowing its audience. You have to know what the users want, what the users are searching, and what motivates the users to buy.
    • Here are some guidelines that you can delve into:
      • Ask your audience through surveys and polls.
      • Find out where they hangout so you can easily interact with them.
    • Do they like email marketing? Would subscribe to your email list?
      • An email list is highly recommended in order to grow your audience. However, some people are sensitive towards it. So, make sure you don’t overwhelm them with multiple emails throughout the week.
      • Develop an email marketing that caters to their wants. If they prefer a weekly email digest, then, don’t pester them with daily updates.
    • What do they know?
      • If your audiences are not tech savvy, it’s useless to discuss highly technical subject matters. They will not understand the jargons used, and it will be too much for them to grasp. However, if they are industry professionals, go ahead and talk about the ins and out of SEO.
    • Are you targeting consumers or businesses?
      • Who are your potential clients? Are you selling directly to consumers or are you selling to other businesses? Know the differences between business to consumer (B2C) and business to business (B2B.) Formulate a strategy that fits your chosen audience.

  1. Distinct Goals

  • It’s not enough for you to have a goal. You need to be more specific than that. Each goal should have a time limit.
  • Know how one goal fits the bigger picture. Be particular in choosing the metric tools and performance indicators you are going to choose.
  • Why are the littlest details such as metrics important? Because you would not want your expenses be larger than your income. The bottom line is that everyone should unanimously agree on what metrics to use. One slight change can cost you a decrease of web traffic, site ranking, and so on.
  • I just want to point out the importance of goals that focuses on the completion of particular tasks like, for example, in terms of inward marketing and SEO.
  • I believe in specifying goals, measuring the progress, and accomplishing them in a specific time period. If needed, adjust them to fit the end goal, which is developing an effective SEO strategy.
  • When you have distinct knowledge of what you want to achieve, you can actually find ways to improve instead of just merely manipulating the stats and search engines.

Yes, this post really starts with #4 because numbers 1 to 3 are right here. Don’t worry; you can easily catch up on part 1 by clicking this link! Every SEO strategy can surely be better by following the 5 tips I’ve given. So, remember them as you develop business strategies.

What Your SEO Strategy Needs (Part 1)

We take time in developing SEO strategies that would help the world of ecommerce in general. It’s nice to know that we think about the benefits it does to each and every one of us. However, we forget our own unique SEO game plan. To help you simplify things, here are 3 things what every SEO strategy needs.

  1. A Mind Mapping Tool
  • A mind map is going to help you from start to finish. You start with a broad idea then, you narrow the possible solutions gradually. It does not only help you think about the present, but also the future.
  • Mind Meister is one popular mind mapping tool. With this, you are able to easily visualize new concepts and combine them together with existing ideas. You will be able to see if they fit perfect or not!
  • You can now focus more on developing strategies instead of worrying if they will work. Taking down notes are simplified. Mind Meister helps you to formulate ideas in a very unconventional way. Because it is visual, you can see everything right away. No need to imagine the “what if” scenarios.

3 people discussing their project

  1. A Project Management Tool
  • So, now that your concept is more concrete, you need tools to document.
  • There will tons of tasks to do, goals to achieve, and things to make sure. You need to carefully plan monitor all that you do.
  • As time passes, I’m pretty sure it’s hard to keep track on the unfinished tasks. You need to constantly coordinate with the various teams to know the updates of the project.
  • One should be able to easily revise or edit certain errors. Tools such as Google Sheets, Trello, Workzone, Basecamp, Jira, Wrike will help you keep up with the changes of the project. (Trello is my personal fave by the way!)
    • You need to work as a team and every team member should have a clear knowledge on:
      • who needs to finish a particular task.
      • what tasks should be done first.
      • who is responsible for posting updates.
      • what tasks are not yet done, ongoing, completed, and so on.
  1. Knowledge of the Company
  • Of course, you would not know how to apply your SEO knowledge if you don’t know your company. Even if you are merely a temp, you still need to understand how your company works in order to create the best suited SEO strategy for it. As you create a unique strategy, take note of these factors:
    • The product’s USP.
      • Know the unique selling point. Whether you are selling a single product or a million products, you need to know what sets you apart, and what makes you stand out over your competitors.
      • Moreover, you will know how to connect with your audience, and how promote these products to different people.
    • The company’s beliefs.
      • Whatever strategy you will formulate, it needs to coincide with the company’s vision. Of course, it needs to be favorable to the company, and it should NOT divert from the company’s beliefs.
      • In order to personalize the SEO strategy, you need to know the company’s goals: what they want what to achieve, what they want to develop, and what they want to happen in the future.

SEO Elements to Closely Track this 2019

Last year, 2018 was the year of new changes. Google used Artificial Intelligence for almost 30% of the search made in their website. Additionally, links are not the top most ranking factor anymore. With these changes, I think it’s safe to say that these 4 SEO elements will be critical this 2019.

  1. Knowing Structured Data

  • I know structured data can be uncharted territory for some. To be honest, it just seems difficult at first, but you can copy and paste guides found on the net. You can make your own structured data code by following samples online.
  • Preventing Structured Data Errors
    • Did you know many websites are penalized for inaccurate structured data? Well, it’s possible that it is only an honest mistake, but that does not mean you keep doing it. So, here are a few common structured data mishaps to dodge:
      • Number 1 is, of course, utilizing the wrong structured data.
      • Second, when the published content is not the same as the structured data.
      • Next is when it defies Google’s guidelines.

Woman Listening to a Podcast

  1. Adding Podcast as a Way to Reach Your Audience

  • One popular type of content today is what you call podcast. What are podcasts? Know about it here.
    • If your circle is a fan of podcasts, then, add it on your list of content. Create podcasts that interests your customers.
    • You can invite people to join your podcast, discuss with experts, and promote products that help you fund your episodes. Since it is accessed digitally, people can easily download your audio file and listen to it on their convenient time.
    • Plus, podcasts are generally free. So, who wouldn’t want more free stuffs, right? A great way to inform and educate your audience about what you know.

  1. Centralized Content

  • When your content is all over the place, it’s still useless. Users won’t see any sense reading it. Thus, it will affect your website rankings.
  • Your content should have specific goals to achieve. Content will only get quoted only if it provides solution. So, be helpful and use plain language when talking to audience. This way, you are simplifying things for them. More and more people will link your website on their own site.
  • No content was ever quoted or shared to hundred of websites because it was able to use lots of keyword. People share a post because it was able to help them understand things.

  1. Enhance your Image SEO

  • Images are NOT there for mere beautification purposes. Images as essential as your page title, sub heading, and your URL. All these elements work together to make a web page more enticing to its readers.
    • Also, images help in improving your website rankings. How to do this?
    • It should tell a story.
      • Tell users what to do is not the best option. You have to SHOW them what to do. You can do the showing through images.
      • With illustrations, you can easily explain complicated concepts. Communication is better when you add images. Confusion between you and your users will be avoided if you convey your message using images.
    • It should guide the users.
      • Text instructions are not enough. Sometimes, you can only educate people through visual aids.
      • It is easier to teach when you provide a detailed instruction with screenshots attached. Readers can quickly get what you are trying to emphasize.

SEO Principles That Are Important to Small Business Owners (Part 2)

As a small business owner, you don’t need to dig deeper about SEO. You just need to understand the basics of how it works because knowing SEO will surely lighten your work load.

Two Smiling Women in Gray and Black Coat

Aside from running a business, you need to be your own marketing team, PR team, sales team, customer service team, and even maintenance team. It can be tiring to juggle everything all at once!

Shall we start discussing 2 main SEO principles? (Part 1 is right here in case you’re wondering!)

  • Links

  • We all know links is one of the important ranking signals aside from high-quality content, website speed, user experience. As an online seller, link building can be a tricky thing to learn. In fact, even those who are SEO experts struggle. Here are a few things you need to note:
  • Why are links significant?

    • Some will argue with the semantics, but at its core, you can think of a link as a vote and some votes are more equal than others.
    • A link passes through a “PageRank.” It serves a voting system for the content being associated to. If the linking page is strong, and the link is visible on many pages, the more it has value.
    • The more the link gets clicked, the more it gets important. It has more significance.
  • What to search for in a link?

    • It really depends on the scenario. However, there are a few thing you need to know:
    • Is there a specific for the link to exist aside from link building?
      • If you would say “no,” then, your link has no value at all. So, if there is no specific reason for it, don’t put it on your website. It’s as simple as that!
    • Do your opponents have the link?
      • Having a website that 1 or 2 of your rivals is no harm. However, if it links to 3 or more rivals, then, it’s time to be alarmed. If it is ranking well, it is a firm indication that the links have weight.
    • Would you be satisfied with where the link would be redirected?
      • There are websites with links located at the strangest parts of the site. I don’t see the purpose, but it’s there. If users won’t even utilize it, then, the links you posted are pretty much meaningless. Again, if it has no purpose, don’t include it.
  • Readability should be your main concern.
  • The bottom line is that the anchor text should match the user’s expectation when they click the link. Use words that are appropriate for the content. If you don’t, you are simply misleading you users, and they won’t like that.

  • The Technical Side

    • Technical SEO means the back-end of things: the codes, the servers, and all that. You will be able to feel the impact in these areas:
      • Website speed.
      • Structured data.
      • Internal links.
      • The scripts used.
      • Duplicate content.
      • Inaccurate tags.
      • When changing to HTTPS.
    • Indeed, Technical SEO includes a wide scope of topics such as CMS, hosting, website type, and so on. At some point, it even covers more than that.  So, if you have no knowledge, I suggest you don’t get your hands dirty and end up making things worse. Ask the help of SEO professionals. I’m sure Scottsdale Web Design can help you with this!
