How to Achieve Success in Guest Blogging? (Part 1)

Guest blogging has become an important element in order to widen your reach. Collaboration with other web admins is one common practice to increase web traffic.

Aside from a strong flow of inward traffic, other benefits of guest blogging include: getting backlinks, acquiring potential customers, nurturing positive relationships, advertising your products, and of course, creating brand awareness. In this blog, I am going to tackle some crucial factors that lead to a successful guest blogging venture.

  • Socialize and build new relationships.
  • Interact within your circle, and start to build relationship. You don’t become a guest blogger in a snap. Things, like relationships and connection, need time to develop. You don’t coerce people into welcoming you into their website. It has to come naturally, and the best relationships are forced.
  • The more people know you, the more chances websites request you to be a guest blogger. A website may need refreshing ideas, and that’s you come in handy. You show a new perspective. Offer support by writing about something different.
  • No one will get you as a guest blogger if you are practically a stranger to everyone.
    • So, here are tips to make yourself visible:

    • Leave a relevant comment. Read other people’s post and comment about it. Don’t just comment to advertise your website. That’s not a good idea!
    • Write about brands you look up to. Brands will love it when you notice their products. They will be glad knowing that you mentioned their brand on your blog.
    • Don’t forget to share. Every social media site has emphasized the value of sharing. It is now so easy to spread the word. So, give other blogs a little boost, and for sure, they will return the favor.
    • Interact with them on social media. You are done sharing, but don’t go yet. Interacting with them is equally important. Brands and professionals are social media. So, comment on their post and have a quick chat.
    • The good deeds you do will always come back to you so just keep on supporting sites you love and before you know it, they will be interested on what you have to offer. Just remember the tips I just shared.
  • Choose your potential websites wisely.
  • Not everyone is open to the idea of guest blogging. It may be a prominent strategy, but some businesses choose to skip it. So, there’s no need to insist and shove it on their face. Instead, you do your research and choose the websites that are open to doing collaboration with you.
  • Identify what blogs align with your vision. It feels great to write for a website that shares the same principles and values.
  • You could also reach out to the websites that have same audience as you. If you share the same target market, then, their readers might be interested on what you will share.
  • Lastly, look for websites that are interested on what you will be blogging about. For example, you are a fan of this fashion blog, and you would to do a guest post by sharing your “5 Fashion Must-Haves when Traveling,” or if you are an avid reader, you can blog about “Top 3 Books About Fashion Design.”

      • Increasing pertinent and functional media, video, PDFs, and images.
      • Add research, statistics, case studies, and original data.
    • The goal is to focus on the improved content. This means you will not aim for those topics that did not rank and those topics that ranked high. In line with this check-out the following:
      • WORD COUNT
        • Size matters. It can guide you to know how exhaustive various URLs are in contrast to each other.
      • PROFOUNDNESS
        • Being in the top ranking meant thorough content compared to those they beat in the ranking. Longer content can be a forceful element. Ask yourself, can your content answer the question and other questions associated with the same inquiry?
          • You have to know the following:
            • Interconnected description
            • Common inquiries
            • Outline of pertinent decrees and procedures
      • READABILITY
        • For sure you want to know if your content is good, right? Be objective, use tools.

      • MEDIA
        • Does your content have video and audio files or both? These will not just make your content more interesting but search engine will find it easier to know your content. Also, video and images makes even the most complex topic a lot easier to understand. On the other hand,  video will keep your visitors glued in your site. Put a watermark on your images to prevent them from being taken by your rival site.
  • Enhance your page load speed.

    • The longer your load time is, the lesser sales you are going to have. The worst thing here is that, you will not rank. This means, you have to do what it takes.
      • GET RID OF THE WEB HOSTING
        • The inexpensive web hosts tends to put thousands of hundreds or even thousands of websites in one server. Usually, servers have insufficient horsepower so this slows down the page speed.
      • LESSEN THE HTTP CALLS
        • Each part of your website needs a separate HTTP request. This means, a faster website. But the question is, how do you do it? Simple, remove the plugins that you do not need.
      • OPTIMIZE MEDIA FILES
        • Usually, the videos and images used in sites are bigger than they should be. To optimize, make certain that you have the right format for your media files. And then, check if your media files have the right size.
        • For instance, if the image required is only small, then, don’t resize it to more than 600px wide. Lastly, compress your media file by using WordPress plugins. After doing these steps, your page speed should be faster.

Knowing the Copyright Act

At this day and age, you might think using other people’s photos is totally fine. If you aren’t cautious, you could end up violating the Copyright Act.

Brown Wooden Gavel

Defining the Copyright Act.

If you look into the Copyright Act, it is enacted to protect photographic works. The copyright.gov specifies that whether a photo is captured by a camera, a digital file, or a film, these photos are still covered by the said act. It also includes particular images such as black and white photos, color photos, and etc.

What does this imply?

  • When you search online for photos, the search engines, like Google, are just suggesting relevant images basing from your query.  This does NOT automatically mean that you have the right to use the photo according to your own accord. Without permission from the owner, you CANNOT use the photo especially if it is mentioned that is not for commercial purposes.
  •  It could cost you money. Sadly, many people think that an image on Google is public property. You cannot use it or put it on your own site. The United States Copyright Office have the Copyright Act and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act to protect online works.

Enter DCMA.

  • Aside from the Copyright Act, there is also what you call the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. The DMCA, started in 1998, and it clearly states that the Internet Service Provider (ISP) is not accountable for copyright infringement.
  • It is the user that is responsible for the unauthorized use of digital media files. The ISP has the power to remove materials from a user’s website if they verify a breach of the Copyright Act. The DMCA also mentions paying fees when you infringe someone else’s work.
  • The section 1202 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act states could ask a $2,500 to $25,000 fee if proven that you violated it. Furthermore, under section 1204, penalties could go up to $500,000 fee for a first offense. The fee may vary depending if there are subsequent breaches.  More info about DMCA are posted here: https://www.copyright.gov/legislation/dmca.pdf

  • Remember that the photo you got from Google is still protected by the law. Like in any other situation, you can get into some serious trouble if you are using something that is NOT LAWFULLY YOURS. It could harm your personal website or blog, and it could also mean paying a huge fine.

SEO During the Holiday Season (Part 2)

In the U.S., the Christmas shopping starts early. Basing from the data from Statista, people start to shop on Black Friday until the next succeeding months. Over $123 billion are spent on retail goods. That’s just for 2018 alone!

assorted-color gift box under Christmas tree

After taking that into serious consideration, are you certain that your website is bringing in web traffic and sales? Previously, I discussed the importance of planning. For this post, I will elaborate on the promotional aspect and technical side of things.

Stage 2: The Press and Publicity

  • After you are done planning, your social media team should be ready. Publishing new content is not enough. There should be a group of people equipped to promote whatever you wrote.
  • The assigned team should be able to boost your content, and it should be seen by your target audience. Try to explore the sponsored posts feature on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to reach more people.
    • Add links to your every post. Whether you will post on social media or email your followers, always include a relevant link to your latest products, upcoming flash sale, and other related events.
    • Never forget to rehash the old content. Did you post a buying guide last year? It’s time to update the list and add newer suggestions. Add new products to introduce them to your interested customers.
    • Email your subscribers. For sure, you have a list of customers who bought your products last year. Use this information to reach out to them and inform them about your holiday schedule. Keep them in the loop about your newest deals and products.

Stage 3: The Technical Aspect

  • This is the part where it gets tricky. Websites often fail to revamp for the Christmas season. To be specific, I’m pertaining to the common problem that most websites are not 100% prepared for the increase of web traffic during holidays.
  • Be sure that the proper server is ready to accommodate the sudden increase in traffic. Even known websites have this issue because they failed to anticipate the heavy flow of traffic throughout the Thanksgiving and Black Friday season.
  • It would be very sad to lose all the thousands of web visitors just because there’s no fast server to take in all the eager customers.
  • Load Time

    • Whatever you want to highlight on your website during the holidays, make sure that the landing page loads quickly. It is important to ensure that your web pages would only take a second load. Try to aim to make the loading time less than 2 seconds.
    • Delayed page load time would mean mediocre user experience. It would totally affect your website’s sales during important holidays.
  • Deleted Pages

    • A website is a series of interconnected web pages. So, once you delete one, it would affect the entire website. Make sure when you delete pages, the interconnection is not affected. Provide the necessary prompts to guide the customers into the right direction.
    • As much as possible, avoid deleting pages and changing URLs. Keep the URLs of the important web pages. If you have to, please create the needed 301 redirects.

4 Quick Tips to Improve Content (Part 3)

If you have successfully applied the tips mentioned in part 1 and part 2, I still have more tips to share about quickly enhancing the content that you currently have. Here’s the last part of this 3-part series regarding easy ways to improve content.

person using laptop computer

  1. Utilize other channels too.
  • Just because everyone you know is on Facebook, it does not mean that you should stick to that platform forever. Yes, you could reach millions of people on Facebook, but there are also other channels that will help you boost your content.
  • With the many social media apps available today, it’s not wise to rely on a single channel. Aside from Facebook, there’s Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram, Pinterest, Snapchat, Weibo, Reddit, and many others. For video streaming apps, there’s Twitch, LiveMe, Periscope, Youtube, and YouNow among many others.
  • Take time to explore the other channels as well because you could reach thousands – even millions – of people than solely choosing one platform.
  1. Use what you have learned.
  • Now that you have accounts on various channels, it’s time to use everything you have learned so far. For example, the headline of your most read blog post could also be used as a headline for a sponsored post on Facebook.
  • The same is true for a trending video on Facebook. You could rewrite that video as a blog post. Do not limit your content on a single platform. Always go back to tip #1 and test how you can successfully aid your posts across different channels. Social media, indeed, helps in advertising your products.
  1. Search what’s trending!
  • Sometimes, you are overwhelmed with the overflowing options available. You can’t seem to figure out where to start gathering information. Where can you look for concepts for your next blog post?
  • After writing a bunch of similar content, you try to search for inspiration on the different boards on Pinterest. You can also search the trending topics on Google Trends. Popular sites like Buzzfeed, Upworthy, Wired, Mashable, and Lifewire are some of the websites that offer you a great start in looking for new ideas.
  • Looking through these websites, you will know what people are talking about and what they are sharing all over the internet.
  1. Reuse the best.
  • After you have analyzed your blog posts, look at your most read article and make more of it!
  • You can talk about a similar topic or try to look for a subtopic related to it. That way, you can connect these related blog posts.
  • Perhaps, you can create a video version of your most popular post. Look for ways to reintroduce the topic, and write it from a different perspective.
  • Strive to make it relevant by recreating the same topic. Topic ideas need not to be new. By simply giving it a new twist, an old topic can still be interesting for many people.

BONUS: 5. Instantly grab the attention of your audience.

  • Since this is the finale, I thought of adding a free tip. According to the FacebookBusiness website, on average, mobile users only take 1.7 seconds to scan a piece of content while desktop users take around 2.5 seconds.
  • Add visual cues in order to grab the attention of your audience. You only have a limited time to sway mobile users so make sure that your videos and images are engaging enough.

4 Quick Tips to Improve Content (Part 2)

The best way to improve content is knowing what your audience actually wants. The more you know about the things they like, the more you can produce content that appeals to an audience. Know how your content or how your products make a difference. Ask them what they love seeing, and what they wish to see in the near future. So, these are quick tips in order to improve the blogs you post.

  1. Sprinkle some fun.

  • If you read part 1, I mentioned there that digital media does not necessarily follow the usual suit. So, try to relax because your blog posts do not need to sound formal every time you talk about a topic.
  • When the subject is light, loosen up and add amusing details like emojis for example. Emojis does not mean that your content is totally low-grade. To be honest, emojis aren’t necessarily bad for your content. There’s even a study that proved emojis help in getting emails opened. People open emails more when they see an emoji on the subject line.
  • This totally disproves that adding a funny GIF or inserting a sticker message makes content quality poor and third-rate. In fact, it’s showing the exact opposite. I think people are craving for more light, delightful, and humorous content.
  1. The lesser, the better.

  • Just because your post is longer, it does not mean that it’s automatically better. Various platforms make things shorter. Look at Instagram for example. The videos on Instagram are only limited to a few seconds. The maximum video duration would be around a minute. So, make use of the limited time given.

  • Don’t think that you have an hour to explain your point. Be short and concise on whatever it is you are trying to point out. You don’t need to back up your statement with a lengthy paragraph. Time is an important aspect among readers. You should be able to inform people within a short period of time.
  1. Choosing the basic option.

  • Most of the time, we think that tweaking formatting options are one sure way to enhance content. Well, sometimes, choosing the simplest option is the best decision.
  • Altering little details like the typography, the text size, and the spacing between texts could have a huge impact. The blog post could end up straining the eyes of your readers.

Related: How Important Is Typography in Web Design?

  • Take notice of these little yet important aspects of a blog post. Don’t drastically implement a change of formatting style. Don’t pressure yourself to tweak the settings to enhance the look. Opting for the basic options is the best choice you could ever make.
  1. Combine topics.

  • Sometimes content fails to connect with your audience because you are trying to link 2 totally unrelated topics. What is the relevance of baking to singing, or windows to books?
  • If you want your posts to be engaging, you should be able to establish a connection between the topics you will write about. Find ways of correlating differing topics even to the seemingly unimportant details. Make it intriguing for your audience, and add something funny or comical if you have to.
